BOOK REVIEW

It is really wonderful to read about a teenager who has a fantastic relationship with his mother. The love between Truman and Patsy was the foundation that set out his characterisation and allowed him to bloom.

Truman is ready to blow his small town life and has his sights set on the big city light. But first he has to get through his senior year and the senior year production. Things start looking up when he lands a big role and get even better when he finds out the boy (Mike) he has a crush on is also part of the production.

But things get complicated when it seems Patsy is falling for Mike's father and of course drama unfolds around his friends and the school production. It won't be teenage life without drama.

We don't get to see much of Truman and Mike interacting until more than half-way through the story. And for some of it Mike isn't exactly likeable. 

In my opinion, this reads more like a YA coming-of-age story than a romance novel. And if you approach it from that perspective, then you should fall in love with Truman like I did.

Valor tapped his foot impatiently, trying to ignore the periodic glares from the helicopter pilot. “Can this go any faster?”
Silence.
That’s a no, then?
The second Valor stepped off the helicopter, he reached for his mobile. He tried Bishan first, hoping against all the odds his beloved Bish would be conscious and able to pick up. No answer. Right.
He tried Detective Inspector Spurling next with no luck. He called Hugh, but his old schoolmate didn’t answer either. No news might be good news. I hope.
A friendly police officer met him once he’d gotten away from the helicopter and refused to give him any information while driving him through Windermere. Valor sat, frozen, unable to get his hands to stop shaking. Visions of Bishan covered in dust and blood kept flashing in front of his eyes.
All day an uneasy sensation had gnawed at his stomach. He’d ignored it, assuming all his family drama had caused his inner turmoil. Hugh’s call had brought all the nightmares of the last six months rushing back to him.
As they swerved around a corner, Valor got his first view of what had happened to the beautiful little restaurant. Smoke drifted above a partially collapsed building. The fire was clearly put out, though the firefighters continued to mill about outside.
How had any of his family survived?
Valor stumbled out of the vehicle when it finally came to a stop. “Bish?”
“Val?”
He barely heard Reggie, who stopped him from ducking under the caution tape. “I have to—”
“Bishan isn’t in there. They managed to extract him safely from underneath a collapsed wall. We’ve sealed it off to investigate for arson and attempted murder, and your presence will only muddy the waters for us.” Reggie grabbed him firmly by the shoulder and led him over to one of the unmarked SUVs. “Let’s get you over to the hospital to see him.”

“Might need about three more cups of tea before any of this makes any sense to me.” Valor rested his head on Bishan’s shoulder briefly. “I am so glad you’re home.”
Everyone aside from Valor had been decidedly odd since Bishan’s release from jail. He didn’t like it. At all. Why couldn’t their lives return to business as usual?
Well, probably not business as usual exactly.
Nothing could be quite normal after finding themselves smack dab in the midst of a mystery of the Poirot and Father Brown variety. The police had yet to figure out who’d begun the murderous campaign against former Harrovians; Bishan was only glad they’d stopped pursuing him for it.
He’d been freed from jail two days ago.
And sometimes it still felt as though he were there.
“It’s not an anagram,” Bishan insisted pedantically. And it wasn’t. The creepy murder messages left via bolded letters in old Harrow play programs might be puzzles, but they weren’t anagrams. “They’re not already formed into words that you have to unscramble.”
Valor had spread out the multiple not-anagrams across their kitchen table along with the two that had potentially been deciphered already. “So what are they?”
“Puzzles.”
“Right.” Valor grabbed his cup for more tea. “Do you think they got the first two correct?”
Bishan glanced at the two supposedly decoded messages with a critical eye. They both seemed plausible in the context of the victims and assuming the perpetrator was indeed a former schoolmate of theirs. He found the “Shh” or “Sh” at the beginning to be odd.
Shh. Not so cleverly done. Time’s almost up. When the clock strikes one, whose name shall be crossed out?
Sh. The play has just begun. Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Lord Byron is struck down. How many more to go?
“I’m not the killer. I don’t know.” Bishan picked up one of the programs yet to be deciphered. He wrote down each bolded letter at the top of a plain sheet of paper. “They seem threatening enough to be accurate.”
Valor plucked Staccato off the table and set the cat on his shoulder. “I know you’re not the killer, Bish.”
“I know you know.” Bishan couldn’t keep the slight sharpness out of his voice. He’d never doubted Valor’s belief in him.
Valor stretched a hand out to rest on Bishan’s shoulder. “I was agreeing.”
“Oh.” He deflated slightly. Non-autistics tended to agree by repeating what had been said, something he always found a bit confusing. “Of course.”

The door opened, and Bryton walked into the room carrying a tray. “Hey, Pops thought you might be hungry.”

Marty started to shake his head, but Bryton wasn’t about to hear it, “You will eat it, or I will get my man to hold you down as I puree it and pour it down your throat.”

“You know you really have an attitude. I would think with all that sex you’re having, you would be… I don’t know… skipping around singing Zipadeedoodah or something.” Marty said as he sat down and placed the tray on the side table.

Swirling his hips, Bryton countered, “I’m more the Pitbull and DJ Kass doing the Scooby Doo Pa Pa.”

Marty picked up his roast beef sandwich and took a bite. Bryton walked over to Faruke, “You know, he looks so innocent and sweet when he sleeps. Yet, when he opens his mouth he’s like that Alien creature which spits acid.”

“God, Bryton, why do you have to be such an ass. The man almost died.” Marty hissed.

“And if I recall, it was me who kept it from happening. Somehow I think I’m going to regret it.” Bryton muttered.

Marty snorted as he finished half of the sandwich, took a drink, then said, “This coming from the man who said he needed Faruke to live so he could have someone who could almost match him in sarcasm wars.”

Bryton shrugged, “I’m not the one who promised him dates if he lived.”

Marty felt his stomach knot and feared that half of his roast beef sandwich was going to come back up.

“What’s going on with you?” Bryton asked.

Marty looked at Faruke carding his fingers in his dark black hair. The man was so fucking gorgeous. He was so tall and had muscles on top of muscles and those eyes… son of a bitch, Marty could look into those turquoise orbs for days on end and never get tired of it.

“You really like him, don’t you, Marty?” Bryton softly asked.

Sighing, Marty replied, “I can be standing clear across the room and just a look from him makes me hard as a rock, Bry. I don’t understand it. He is so not my type. He always seems angry. He snaps orders instead of asks. He thinks he can tell me what to do all the time. He’s just not the kind of guy I would look twice at no matter how sexy he is.”

“I don’t think he’s angry as much as frustrated and pissed. Valkin said that he and Marston were best friends. The three of them used to do everything together and the day that Marston showed his true colors, he killed two of Faruke’s guys and damn near killed him too. Then you have to add in the fact that they had to leave the only home they have ever known, leaving behind their friends, family… it just can’t be easy.”

Marty nodded, stood up and turned to Bryton. “I just don’t know. I don’t understand any of this. How did we go from two average guys trying to live in an average world, to trying to save the world with men from outer space who can shift into machines?”

Bryton snickered, “Well it did liven up our lives, that’s for sure.”

“Bryton, I’m serious. What do we know about any of this? Did you see the size of those men who attacked this place?” Marty asked in awe.

“Marty, our side is just as big and if you remember correctly, we kicked ass too. They didn’t leave here unscathed. You were amazing coming up with those machines to help Valkin and the others fight off Marston and his men.

Faruke suddenly made a sound. Marty quickly turned to see those beautiful eyes looking at him.

Matteo stared out the restaurant window into the darkness of Folsom Boulevard. It was getting dark earlier as summer edged into fall. Streetlights flickered on as cars drifted by, looking for parking or making the trip out of Midtown toward home.
The sign on the window read “Ragazzi” (the boys), lettered in a beautiful golden script just two months old. Investing in this little restaurant his uncle had left to them when he'd passed away had been their ticket out of Italy. But now with each passing day, as seats sat empty and tomatoes, pasta, and garlic went uneaten, the worry was gnawing ever deeper into Matteo's gut.
Behind him in the open, modernized kitchen, Diego was busy cooking—his mother's lasagne, some fresh fish from San Francisco, and some of the newer Italian dishes they'd brought with them from Bologna. The smells of boiling sauce and fresh-cooked pasta that emanated from the kitchen were entrancing.
They'd sent the rest of the staff —Max and Justin—home for the evening. The three customers who had shown up so far didn't justify the cost of keeping their waiter and busboy on hand.
Matteo stopped at the couple's table in front of the other window. "Buona sera," he said, smiling his brightest Italian smile.
"Hi," the man said, smiling back at him. He was a gentleman in about his mid-fifties, wearing a golf shirt and floppy hat. "Kinda quiet tonight, huh?"
"It always gets busier later," Matteo lied smoothly. "Pleasure to have you here. Can I get you anything else?"
"A little more wine, please?" the woman said, holding out her glass so the charm bracelet on her wrist jangled.
"Of course." He bowed and ducked into the kitchen.
He gave Diego a quick peck on the cheek.
His husband and chef waved him off with a snort. "Più tardi. Sto preparando la cena."
"I can see that. Dinner for a hundred, is it? It’s dead out there again tonight.”
Diego shot him a dirty look.
Matteo retrieved the bottle of wine from the case and returned to fill up his guests' glasses. “What brings you in tonight?” Maybe they saw our ad.…
“Just walking by and we were hungry. I miss the old place though.… What was it called, honey?”
Her husband scratched his chin. “Little Italy, I think?”
“That’s it! It was the cutest place. Checkered tablecloths, those great Italian bottles with the melted wax… so Italian.”
Matteo groaned inside. “So glad you came in” was all he said with another smile.

Scott lives with his husband Mark in a little yellow bungalow in East Sacramento, with two pink flamingos by the front porch.

He spends his time between the here and now and the what could be. Indoctrinated into fantasy and sci fi by his mother at the tender age of nine, he devoured her library. But as he grew up, he wondered where the people like him were.
