In my pocket my phone rings. I manage to fish it out before it goes to voicemail.
“Hello?” 

“Hey, I just wanted to see how things went.” The voice, which sounds as good as rain on a tin roof in the middle of a drought, belongs to my best friend, flatmate, and object of my affection for over a decade, Jake Ellis.

I give him a wry chuckle. “Pretty fucking bad actually.” But hearing Jake’s voice helps me forget all the shit that just went down in Dean’s office. He’s always had that effect on me. 

“Ah fuck, man, I’m sorry.” 

Jake and I have been friends since we were in primary school, but it was only when we hit high school and everyone was trying to steal glimpses in the girls’ changing room after PE that I realised I wasn’t interested in joining them. No, I was more interested in sneaking peeks at my best friend. Not that I’ve ever told him, or anyone. I have an image to uphold, and even I’ve got to admit I do it pretty fucking well. 

“Nothing to be sorry for, Dean is a douche anyway.”

“What happened?” he asks.

“Got the sack,” I reply.

“Shit. Are you okay?”

“Eh.” I shrug, even though he can’t see me.

“Do you want anything? Need anything?”

I’m not going to lie; the fact that Jake is so concerned for me, for my wellbeing makes my heart swell. He knows me so well and that right there is why there will never be anyone else for me. “I think I’m okay,” I reply.

“Still, it’s got to suck.”

I blow out a breath. “Yeah.”

“What are you going to do now?”

“I don’t have a fucking clue.”

“When are you coming home?” he asks.

I look at my watch. “There’s a flight leaving in a couple of hours, I’ll be on that.”

“Good. Just come home, and we can work out your next move. You don’t have to have everything worked out right this second, okay?”

I nod. This, right here, is why I love Jake so much. He gets me. He’s the only one that ever has, and I know he’s the only person who ever will. “Thanks, Jakey, I’ll see you soon, yeah?”

“You know I’ll be here,” he says before hanging up.

My professional future might be a clusterfuck right now, but as long as I have Jake, that’s all I’ll ever need.

EXCERPT

“Don’t move,” he said in a whisper.
“What are we doing?”
“I want these for me. I’ll sign whatever you want so you know I’ll keep them to myself, but I get a different you. One only I see, and I want it on film.”
It was the most romantic thing someone had ever said to me.
“I want to be able to look at them and remember this. You.”
“I want a copy.”
“Sure.” He brushed his fingers over the small of my back, sending a spark up my spine. “Now stand still.”
I indulged him and stayed in place. He unzipped the bag and slid out his DSLR. He changed something and then held it up to his face and clicked the shutter. Taking a look at the screen, he moved ever so slightly to the left and held it to his face again.
“Look at the fire.”
I did as I was told. He came close and moved my arm with the drink a fraction and placed my other arm over the back of the sofa.
Click. Click. Click.
He set the camera aside and took a seat on the edge of the chair next to me.
“Done with my repayment so soon?”
There was a light in his eyes. “Not a chance.” He looked me over, his eye stopping on the top two buttons of my shirt which remained undone. “But you’ll want that photo. To release for something. You look too alluring and regal to not have it. It was more for you than for me.”
I was shocked. “Let me see.”
He picked up the camera again and leaned closer to me to show me the screen. I looked like something out of a novel. Mysterious and alluring. I liked it. And I didn’t like many photos of myself.
“You’re quite talented.”
He sat back, keeping the camera in his lap. “How much liberty are you giving me?”
I mirrored him and looked him over, taking my time with my answer. “Why are you asking?”
Lust crossed through his gaze. “Take off the shirt.”
I obliged him, slowly working my fingers down the buttons. I slid it off and set it aside. He looked me over, hungry. My cock stirred at the look. I’d never felt so desired by another person. He slid forward on the seat and brought the camera back to his face. I stayed as I was until he told me to move.
“Sit on the edge of the table,” he said breathless.
I was glad this was getting to him as much as it was me. It was entirely foreign to give someone such a thing over me. To allow someone to take these photos. It was daring and exhilarating. I’d have to be careful or I’d get addicted to the acting out like some bored teenager.
I sat on the edge of the table closest to the fire, and he moved back to take a few shots. I looked up when he hadn’t said anything in a few moments to find him just watching me. The fire illuminated his scar, and I wanted to kiss the length of it, from his brow to his lips. I licked my lip and my chest rose as I inhaled fully, trying to calm myself. He snapped another photo.
“What do you see?” I asked, unable to stand wondering a moment longer. I wanted to know how he saw me.
“I see hunger,” he said as he came closer. “The way you look at me.” The camera hung at his side as he stalked closer.

When not staying up all night writing, J.R. Gray can be found at the gym where it's half assumed he is a permanent resident to fulfill his self-inflicted masochism. A dominant and a pilot, Gray finds it hard to be in the passenger seat of any car. EXCERPT

Prologue

From the shadows, he emerges. The small pool of olive oil on his hands glistens in the candlelight and drips on the tile floor through his fingers.
Decadent.
Hedonistic.
Dark.
I glimpse his face as he approaches the bed, and he’s grinning wickedly, his hair messy and wild. Bare feet on a cold floor. Shirt off. Jeans unbuttoned, with a thatch of groomed pubic hair peeking out, his root showing.
My body tingles and gooseflesh erupts on my arms and legs.
His appraising eyes slowly, languidly, take in my form.
And I love it. I absolutely love the way he looks at me, like he’s appreciating every freckle, every hair follicle, every curve. My painted toes. My voluptuous calves. My ample thighs. And on up.
Another drip of olive oil plops on the floor. Part of me thinks it’s a waste. The other part of me loves this game.
The wait, the watching, makes me pant, and I breathe faster and faster as he comes closer. My skin’s glowing in his dim room.
What surprise does he have for me this time?
The mystery. I love the mystery and anticipation. I don’t know what’s coming next. I don’t know the plan.

With a bite of his lip, trying to control his smile, he rubs his hands together, making a suction sound from the lubrication. The oil smells fruity, green—if you could smell a color—and bitter.
I’ve licked it on his skin enough times to know its taste. The complexity of the flavors. How just a drop on the tongue can make me want so much.
I love it.
Even though I shouldn’t.
My eyes stay on his hands. I’m obsessed with them, especially his callouses. Over time, they’ve built up on the pads of his palms, right next to where his fingers begin. The telltale sign of a life lived working outside, although it’s not what he wants. Sometimes his rough patches crack and bleed, a hazard of using a rake to beat the olives out of the trees.
A hazard of using his hands.
Those hands, those scratchy callouses now skim down my naked body, half-lit in the dark room, leaving a trail of oil. My hair splays across the pillow. His light touch makes my nipples point up. My pulse pound. My body ache. I arch up into his fingers, wanting more. Needing more.
Needing him.
We shouldn’t be doing this. This isn’t how my life is supposed to be.
But nothing can stop our desire.

Adjusting my guitar, I turn around and freeze, every muscle in my body loosening at the stunning woman sitting on the stool next to me. One look at her, and the air in the sound booth evaporates, stealing it right out of my lungs.

“Keep looking at me like that, and I’ll lock the door, shut off the lights, and fuck you up against the window. I’ll have them rattling harder than they’ve ever vibrated before.”

A sharp breath escapes Julia’s mouth. Her eyes go wide. Her lips are painted in a delicious shade of light pink, glossy and so plump my taste buds explode in my mouth. Damn, the woman has my knees knocking together. Straight pin-up version of sex is what she is. Earth-shattering sex. A little rough with a whole lot of meaning.

She looks much better than she did nearly a week ago when I climbed the steps to her house leading to the unknown. I’d like to think I had something to do with it. The truth is, it’s all her and the strength she possesses.

I wrap my arm around her waist, yanking her to the edge of the stool, then lift my hand to settle on that gorgeous face.

“I dare you.”
