Out of all the stories in the series, this was the book I was most looking forward to reading. I so wanted to see what this duo will do with the story about the queen of fairies. I was looking forward to reading about a multilayered woman of strength and grit.
Alas, I didn't quite get the story I'd hoped for.
Queen of enchanted creatures, Zelladine, has cursed the human King Basil and hidden the 'body' of his daughter Briar Rose. The King then sends his kingsmen to capture Zelladine and torture her to find out the whereabouts of Briar's body.
When the kingsmen turn up, Zelladine isn't afraid until they cage her with dark magic and take her to their fortress. Without any magical powers to defeat them, she is subjected to physical and sexual torture in order to extract the information they require. She doesn't give them the answers they want and enjoys the pain, turning it into a game.
And that is basically the story.
Unfortunately this story didn't work for me for two reasons.
First of all, there was just too much sadism in this for me to enjoy the erotica.
Secondly, I didn't enjoy seeing someone who should be a multilayered character being reduced to a simple pain slut and pleasure slave for mere mortal men whom I didn't think had earned her compliance.
Sigh.
But, hey, this is just my opinion.
Read the book for yourself and make up your own mind. I'm sure many others would enjoy it more than I did.
