Hello, reader. We're mighty excited today as we welcome our guest to the hot seat. In the hot seat series, we host our favourite fictional characters in the hot seat and ask then 20 quick fire questions. Today, it the turn of Hugh Wilkes, the hero from Desert Heat and Native Tongue by +Lucy Felthouse
Over to the interview...
- What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Honestly, I don’t think I’ve achieved it
yet. I have a bunch of smaller achievements, like passing my driving test,
getting into the army, being promoted… but when it comes to great achievements,
well, I hope they’re in my future.
- What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Not what; who. Rustam Balkhi.
- What is your current state of mind?
I’m feeling lighter than I have for a long
time. There’s been so much of me that I’ve held back from people, and now
everything’s out in the open it’s fantastic. I’m also, if you’ll pardon the immense
soppiness of this statement, crazy in love, and that’s even more than
fantastic. That’s… words can’t even describe. Just the best.
- What is your most treasured possession?
I don’t have one, really. I value people
much more than possessions, and the nature of my life means that I don’t
accumulate an awful lot of stuff, anyway/
- What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Think I already answered that one—Rustam
Balkhi.
- What is your most marked characteristic?
I don’t know. I think I’m pretty
unremarkable, really. Probably my determination.
- When and where were you the happiest?
Right now. I have everything I’ve ever
wanted, and it’s only going to get better.
- What is it that you most dislike?
Bigots.
- What is your greatest fear?
Losing someone I care about. That’s
probably a crazy thing for a soldier—particularly someone who has lost friends
and colleagues—to say, but I can’t help it. That kind of loss is no easier for
me than for a civilian.
- What is your greatest extravagance?
I don’t have one. As I said I really don’t
put much stock in possessions. I think my greatest extravagance is still in my
future, and will probably be when I buy a house, hopefully with Balkhi.
- What is your greatest regret?
Life’s too short for regret. You just have
to make the most of every situation.
- What is the quality you most like in a man?
I’m really not too experienced in this
department. Before Balkhi I didn’t have any serious relationships, just a
handful of casual hook ups that meant nothing. So any qualities I mention are
going to be ones Balkhi has!
- What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I don’t know, really. Perhaps sometimes I’m
so focused on what’s right in front of me that other things that I should have
done slide by.
- What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Small mindedness.
- What do you most value in your friends?
Loyalty and honesty.
- Who is your favorite hero, fictional or real?
Jack Reacher’s pretty awesome.
- On what occasions do you lie?
I try very hard not to lie outright, and
would only do it if it was absolutely necessary. My recent past has meant I’ve
had to skirt the truth, lie by omission and hide a lot of things, but I wasn’t
given a choice. I certainly feel happier now I no longer have to do that.
- Which is your favorite word or phrase?
Fuck.
- What is your least favorite word or phrase?
Faggot—or any other derogatory phrase used
for a gay man or woman.
- If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Nothing major, I don’t think. I suppose
most people would change something physical about themselves, like be taller,
or have a bigger dick. But Balkhi seems to love me as I am, so for that reason
I’d stick with it!

They may be back on British soil, but the battle isn’t over.
When Captain Hugh Wilkes fell for his Afghan interpreter, Rustam Balkhi, he always knew things would never be easy. After months of complete secrecy, their return to England should have spelt an end to the sneaking around and the insane risks. But it seems there are many obstacles for them to overcome before they can truly be happy together. Can they get past those obstacles, or is this one battle too many for their fledgling relationship?

Excerpt:
Spotting a slot, Wilkes headed for it, pulling in carefully, then
turning off the reading light and the engine. Taking his phone from his pocket,
he fired off a text message.
Just pulled into a parking
space downstairs. I’m here! H x
Balkhi would have to buzz him into the building—apparently they’d
had issues with anti-social behaviour in the past, so the only people that
could access the building now, even the communal areas, were those with keys.
Returning his phone to his pocket, Wilkes began gathering his
belongings from the front of the car, before exiting and moving around to the
boot. Popping it open, he retrieved his weekend bag, then closed up and locked
the vehicle. Looking around—fortunately the car park was well-lit, so he could
see where he was going—he spotted one of the doors that stood between him and
his boyfriend. He strode purposefully towards it, not wanting to waste any more
time—they only had the weekend together.
As he reached the outer door, he realised he wouldn’t need to be
buzzed in, after all. Standing just on the other side, visible through the
glass, was Balkhi. The Afghan swung the door open so quickly that Wilkes had to
jump back to avoid being smacked in the face.
Balkhi gasped. “Shit, sorry!”
“It’s okay,” Wilkes replied, shrugging.
Then, unexpectedly, there was silence. Wilkes’ heart pounded again.
Crap—what was going on? Since when did the two of them have nothing to say to
each other? Then he realised—it wasn’t that they had nothing to say, it was that they had so much to say that apparently
neither of them could decide how to begin. There was also the fact they were in
public to consider.
Wilkes cleared his throat. “You going to invite me in then?”
“Yes, yes, of course. Come on!” Balkhi led him to a tiny lift in the
corner of the vestibule and pressed the button for the third floor. When it
arrived, they stepped in, waited to be delivered to their floor, keeping a
respectable distance between them at all times, then exited. Another door stood
between them and the flats. Balkhi pressed a keyring-type thing to a sensor,
then pulled it open.
A moment later they were in front of flat number sixteen—Balkhi’s
place. Finally. Once they were
inside, once they had some privacy, they could say what they really meant, and
do what they really wanted to do.
Balkhi couldn’t get that damn door open quickly enough, in Wilkes’
opinion.
