Do you read a story and think, if only the author would change this or that, it would be perfect? What if a story you already like is re-written?
I first read the initial version of this story when I was on a binge read-a-thon on this author and practically read every short story and novella of his I could get. It was a story I enjoyed. I really liked Booker and Grayson but I thought it was a shame we didn't get more on-the-page time with the two of them.
Fast forward to a few days ago when I read this revised version and I think I had a grin on my face throughout. I couldn't put the book down once I started reading it. I read it in one sitting and a part of me didn't want it to end.
I kept thinking: this is how re-writes should be done.
The original story has been enhanced. Booker and Grayson have been fleshed out into well-developed characters, giving them backstories that make them empathetic and their on-the-page interactions were so delicious. Even Hoosier came to life in this revision.
There's one niggle I have, though. And it has to do with a plot element. At the start of the story Grayson gets threatened by Duncan. This is the primary reason he needs protection and seeks Booker's help. Also, sometime later when he interferes with a gang member, he gets threatened by the gang member.
So there's a showdown coming between him and one or more of these characters. It is a major plot point and a driver for the story. The readers expects the showdown. So when Booker is no longer around, we expect Grayson to defend himself from one or more of these people. But this never happens. Not on page anyway. We are told that he fought and won which isn't the same as seeing it happen and celebrating his transition from bitch to boss with him.
Still, niggle or not, I love the journey Grayson and Booker took from an initial arrangement of protection for sex to a full love story, even in a dark place like a prison and considering the crimes and jail terms. The interactions between Grayson and Booker got me all tingly. Their chemistry was just perfect, sweet and steamy, dark and yet hopeful. This was just one of those story that left me feeling good when I got to the end, and I'm going to read again and again. Perfect for fans of gay erotic romance.
