Maya's Review
This is a story about a woman, Marissa who is new to BDSM and is looking to explore some of her submissive fantasies. Cam is an experienced Dom who is assigned to assess her suitability for membership in a club. It turns out they work in the same hospital, she is a doctor and he is her nurse.
Cam was great. Despite the display of overt sadism (sadistic Doms don't do it for me and hot candle wax on freshly shaved, sensitive labia was just 'ouch' to me), he displayed vulnerability and humanity that endeared me to him. I fell in love with him in this scene.
She turned and walked toward the elevator bank, forbidding
herself to look back. She pressed the button. The ancient elevator lurched
noisily from somewhere overhead and began its descent. When the door opened,
she started to step inside, but suddenly strong hands gripped her shoulders and
she was whirled to face Cam, who pulled her once more into his arms.
“Who am I kidding?” he said, as he buried his face in her
hair. “I can’t leave you. If I have to wait until tomorrow to kiss you, I’m
afraid my body will spontaneously combust. Can I come up? Please, beautiful
Marissa, can I make love to you?”
Marissa laughed and pulled him into the waiting elevator
car. “I thought you’d never ask.
Marissa, however, lacked personality. There were just some things about her character that didn't quite ring true to me. For someone who was new to the scene, she displayed a lack of hesitation to every suggestion that felt unrealistic. After just one scene with Cam, she was happy with everything he came up with, responded positively to everything. I mean really? No doubts at all. Everything he wants to do is just right? Don't you have any limits? Every one else is piercing their genitalia. Oh I know. I'll get mine pierced too. Never mind that the others had been in relationships and in the scene longer.
And guess what? Cam had a ring ready and waiting for the piercing. Just too perfect to be realistic for me. There was just no internal conflict, at least not enough to get me to connect with her.
The story is well paced despite a slow start and elements of suspense are introduced later when both their jobs are put on the line. A good introduction to this author's work.
