When the last thing you want, is everything you need….

Seb Calloway isn’t interested in shifters. After his best friend bonded with one, he avoids getting involved with them—no matter how hot they are—to prevent the same thing from happening to him. Why take the risk for a few hours of fun?

Tim Walters is the pack doctor. Considered to be mild-mannered and non-threatening by pack standards, he prides himself on being able to stay calm and maintain his control at all times. Desperate for a bond of his own, he knows his interest in Seb is an exercise in futility, but he can’t seem to help himself.

When news emerges that threatens Seb’s safety, he and Tim need to fake a relationship to keep Seb safe. Despite Seb’s refusal to be anything other than friends with benefits, what starts out as pretend, quickly becomes more—for Tim at least. If Tim doesn't want to end up heartbroken, he needs to prove to Seb that loving a shifter doesn’t mean losing himself.

BOOK REVIEW

I read Bitten by Mistake and Bitten by Design practically back to back, so I'm going to do a two in one review as the two books are closely linked.

While you could read Bitten by Design as a standalone, to fully understand everything it is best read after reading book 1.

Bitten by Mistake
Jared and Nathan land in a quagmire of shifter politics when Nathan, a wolf shifter, bites Jared (who hates shifters) by mistake. This triggers a mating bond between them. And as Jared doesn't like shifters, this provides the grounds for the main conflict for the story. The other conflict is that you need permission and paperwork before a shifter can bite a human. Otherwise it is punishable by death and banishment from the shifter. So Jared is entitled to report Nathan for the bite.

But he doesn't, choosing instead to stay hidden with Nathan until the full moon when they find out if he will turn into a shifter or not. Of course the more time they spend together the stronger their bond gets and one love making is involved the mating bonds becomes sealed.

Like all things, their secrets doesn't stay hidden for ever and there are shifters who take advantage to punish Nathan and his pack. The question becomes, will Jared accept their mating bond and stand up for Nathan when the shit hits the fan?

This story started a little slow for me but it soon picked up and I found myself getting engrossed in the story. It was interesting reading about a character who hated shifters. Although I thought Jared came on strong with that. It's kind of like saying you don't like a particular race because you dated one and he turned out to be an a-hole. You can't dismiss a whole race of people based on one person's actions. That's racism.

Anyway, I digress. I loved this story regardless. I loved the sexual tension that sizzled throughout as Nathan and Jared navigated their emotions and the situation they found themselves in. And when they finally got their act together, oh boy, my windows steamed up. 🔥😉😃 I also loved the level of suspense and action in this story. Exactly the way I love my paranormal romances.

Bitten by Design

In this story we have Seb who is Jared's friend and Tim, who is the pack doctor. We catch a glimpse of them in book 1 and know there's a connection between them.

But Seb has sworn not to get involved with a shifter because he is afraid of getting bitten and forming a mating bond and having the choice taken away from him. Tim, however, is attracted to Seb and would love to mate with him.

So when Seb is injured after a night out and being scared by rogue shifters, Tim  steps in to help him while he recuperates. This also bring shifter politics complications which require that Tim and Seb pretend to be dating. For Tim it's not pretend. And for Seb it might not be if he could ever get over his determination not to be bitten by a shifter and be mated to one.

For me, this story wasn't as strong as book 1. For one, I just couldn't get my head around Seb's fear of being bitten considering he'd dated shifters in the past. Unfortunately it meant that for most of the story there was this unrequited love thing going on with Tim who did everything to show Seb how much he cared about him. And yet, Seb continued to have his blinkers on. It was frustrating. he just couldn't see beyond the fact that Tim was a shifter and loved him. It also meant that the chemistry between them didn't feel strong enough.

On the whole, this is still a good story. It was great catching up with Jared and Nathan as well as meeting more members of the pack. I for one am curious about Alec. Does he get a story? I hope so.
