Leave it to handsome lawyer Colby Maddox to save Cristian’s life. He takes the case and the attraction between them is quick and undeniable. After several passion-filled encounters with Colby, Cristian unexpectedly wants to break all his rules. However, before they can contemplate a future together, they’ll have to clear Cristian’s name and find the real murderer.
Kay's Review
In a week where I've read varying crime thriller/mystery books practically back to back, this book stands out as being among the good ones. It's a good cross between a police procedural, murder mystery and gay romance. Throw in some corrupt cops and church-related sex scandals and you have an interesting read.
The story is told entirely from Cristian Flesh's POV in a sort of 'noir' type narrative. Except Cristian is not some private detective who wears a raincoat and hat. LOL. He's firmly in the t-shirt and jeans category. Also, he's young, in his 20s although he's risen through the ranks quite quickly, much to the envy of some of his fellow policemen. But he can hold his own among them. He doesn't hide his gay lifestyle and lives by a set of rules which includes 'no relationships' and one-night stands. This unfortunately leads him into trouble when he becomes a suspect in a murder investigation of one of his lovers.
I have to say I really liked Cristian right from page one. I totally loved Colby and understood him. He was such an opposite to Cristian in many way and what Cristian needed. I loved the way he gradually broke down Cristian's walls and made him break his own rules. He never pushed, was always understanding. And that is what love does. Wasn't it interesting that he could accept Cristian's flaws but Cristian couldn't accept his?
There is a great cast of supporting characters and each one played a part in moving the story forward. The narrative style drew me in and kept me turning the pages. The murder mystery wasn't difficult to unravel. In fact I knew who the killer was the minute I met him on page and I wondered why Cristian never suspected him till the end, since he was supposed to be such a good detective.
The biggest pull for me was the romance between Cristian and Colby. The smexy scenes were totally up my street and hot. There's still so much we don't know about Cristian and I look forward to more from this series.
