I have to start by saying that this book is more a paranormal/suspense than it is a romance. Sure there is a love interest angle throughout but it is overshadowed by the hair-raising intrigue and action.
I have to start by saying that this book is more a paranormal/suspense than it is a romance. Sure there is a love interest angle throughout but it is overshadowed by the hair-raising intrigue and action.
Daciana is obsessed with being human and will do just about anything to obtain an elixir which will ensure she doesn't turn into a permanent wulfkin. In the process, she hides things from her wolf pack and constantly lies to her boyfriend, Connell, a human who never knows what she's up to or her whereabouts.
Meanwhile there's a new breed of bloodthirsty werewolf on the loose which is killing and eating humans and seems to be targeting Daciana's friends or acquaintances. It is only a matter of time before it comes after Daciana and Connell.
The action is fast and some of the descriptions of the animal attacks are quite graphic and gory. The fight scenes are well-described and thought-through. The suspense is heart-thumping and reasonably well maintained throughout although I managed to figure out the plot easily. Well, I like puzzles and suspense and I enjoy figuring out villains and plots. I enjoyed the descriptions of the Romanian locations/forests and felt as if I was watching a Gothic movie at times.
The romance element never really flew, for me. Daciana spent so much of this story telling lies to her boyfriend and then worrying that he would break up with her that I felt her actions where so selfish. Ultimately she put him in danger by the things she did. Personally I don't know any self-respecting person who would put up with her level of deceit especially since she didn't make any effort to win him back in the end. So, no, I don't believe they would have a happy ever after despite coming together in the end.
Overall, this is a page-turner. I picked it up last night and didn't put it down until I finished. The paranormal intrigue is just at the level that I enjoy, I just wished the romance lived up to the rest. I highly recommend this for fans of dark paranormal/horror and romantic suspense.
